|New Italian AC75 launched
The third AC 75 foiling monohull was launched in Italy yesterday in preparation for the 2021 America’s Cup. Like the other two yachts already sailing, the boat is a beast and looks formidable, in fact it looks downright sinister. Bow on it looks like some kind of predator which I guess in some ways it is. The Wednesday launch was the culmination of two years of construction that involved over 90 people including 37 team designers. After a total of 78,000 work hours the newly unveiled Luna Rossa touched the water for the first time and sat on her lines looking like a cat about to spring.
This is the sixth challenge for the America’s Cup by the Luna Rossa team and this time their name has been extended to the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team to make note of two additional sponsors that have been added. One other notable addition is that of the Australian sailor Jimmy Spithill who has won the America’s Cup twice and lost it once. Spithill is a formidable sailor and will be looking to take back the auld mug from Emirates Team New Zealand who won the last AC in Bermuda quite decisively.
There will be a number of events leading up to the America’s Cup which will take place in Auckland, New Zealand starting on Saturday, March 6, 2021. The location and format of some of these events are still being determined but for sure the first race will take place in Cagliari on the south coast of the Italian island of Sardinia. A stunningly beautiful location by the way. In 2020 there will be three more events with locations still to be determined and a special Christmas Regatta in Auckland from 10 to 20 December.
It’s going to be unreal to watch how all of this unfolds. These new AC 75’s are quite extraordinary and I wonder how they are going to maneuver without getting their foils hooked around each other. The speeds are also going to me amazing to witness. Can you imagine the closing speeds of these beasts and at what point do you decide it’s time to duck or tack? Well it’s going to be an exciting 2020 say nothing of the America’s Cup in 2021.
