I WAS THINKING Thursday morning it was about time for more news on the awful fate of Aegean, the Hunter 376 that slammed straight into North Coronado Island during the Newport Ensenada Race in April. And bingo! Up pops a post from my fellow SAILfeed associate, the mysterious Mariner, describing how a pair of divers from San Diego, Russell Moore and Ed Harris, have found the wreck of the boat right where it should have been, under the cliff where Aegean's SPOT track ended.

Aegean Wreck Found

When the Aegean, a 37-foot Hunter, abruptly disappeared during the Newport-Ensenada Race, killing four, many speculated that the sailboat may have been run down by a big ship. A US Sailing Indepenedent Review Panel in June determined that the Aegean almost certainly struck the tip of North Coronado island. But there was always just the tiniest shred of doubt.

Now two San Diegans have likely put any questions to rest by discovering the wreck of the hull off Coronado Island:

Aegean SPOT track

This is pretty weird. I previously mentioned the tragic loss of Aegean in the Newport Ensenada Race off southern California last weekend, and since then have been following developments with interest. The original presumption was that the boat, a 37-foot Hunter, had been run down by a ship, and this seemed to have been confirmed by at least one eyewitness on another boat. But Aegean's SPOT track also shows the boat running directly into the north end of North Coronado Island at a speed of about 7 knots.

It's been an awful month for racing sailors in California. First came the well-publicized loss of Low Speed Chase in the Farallones Race off San Francisco, which resulted in five fatalities and an unprecedented Coast Guard ban on further offshore races in the area. Now this weekend comes word that a Hunter 376, Aegean, has been lost in the Newport Ensenada Race, presumably in a collision, with four apparent fatalities.
