Excellent article, Charlie. When I started writing for SAIL in the 1980s, my editor was Martin Luray, a fine writer and all-around good guy.
At his house one day, Marty told me that his all-time favorite short piece of sailing writing was an essay by Carleton Mitchell about a solo winter sail on the Severn river at Annapolis. I remembered the piece well, as it was also one of my favorites. It was published in SAIL or Chesapeake Skipper, I think. It would be wonderful to find it again.
Coincidentally, I now live about a mile from Mitchell's former home on Whitehall Creek near Annapolis. His big house is in a lovely spot that 1950s cruising guide writer Fessenden Blanchard described as "A miniature Sandy Hook."
