Remember when you were first starting out in the cruising world? So young, so innocent. Remember all of those cruising misconceptions you had? Sure, you learned pretty quickly what was what, but not everyone does. For some the misconceptions persist. That is why I'm here—to point them out—set you straight. I give you Twitter hashtag #cruiserdelusions.

  1. Binoculars are the equivalent of an invisibility cloak.

Quit staring you old pervert, we can all see you.

  2. Cats really aren't that much better than monohulls.

    Oh yes, yes they are.

  3. Bigger isn't better.

Did you believe her when she first told you that? Face it, nobody chooses the small boat because that's what they really want.

  4. We don't need a watermaker.

If you don't mind smelling like a week-old sock every day of the week.

  5. I hate motoring, I'll sail 99% of the time.

Oh, how cute. You've never sailed beyond sight of your yacht club have you?

  6. Gray teak looks just as nice as varnish.

    You're just lazy.

  7. We'll be equals (captain and co-captain).

    No, no you won't.

  8. I'm going to learn a language/how to play the guitar.

    No, no you won't.

  9. Sunbrella Pacific Blue is the best color ever!

And turquoise jewelry is the cat's meow.

  10. It will only cost about $5,000 to refit this boat.

Come here (sucker), I want to talk to you about timeshares.

The list goes on of course. We cruisers are nothing if not delusional. Please feel free to add your own in the comments or on Twitter.
