Who Uses Phones Anyway?

Cruising,

I realized today that maybe I’m relying a little bit too much on the website to relay information to family. Ali and I have never been phone people. We were the type to throw the phone back and forth to each other while the person on the other end of the line sat there listening and waiting for somebody to say hello (hint: we’ve never had caller id). It’s been ten years since we had a phone and in that time I doubt we’ve made more than ten calls per year. In fact that’s probably overestimating it by a factor of two. We’re e-mail people. Let’s e-mail back and forth a few times and if there is something really important that can’t be hashed out that way then we’ll succumb to the dreaded phone call. Video Skype has helped our communication skills a bit, but that’s still used pretty sparingly.

Anyway, how I realized today that the website was becoming too strong a vehicle of communication for us was that I got an e-mail from my dad. To my long lost son from your long lost dad, I think is how he put it. Call me sometime.

Okay, so that was one clue. But the biggest clue came when we were talking and he asked, “So, did you ever publish that book?”

Oops…maybe it’s time we pick up a phone a little more often.
